Dear member of Larne Golf Club
Welcome to the 128th year of Larne Golf Club, where I had the honour and privilege of becoming Captain on the 25th of January. I joined Larne in 1995 having played most Sundays with a group of members who called themselves ‘The Hangover Club’. From those days, friendships were formed that last to this day and many more lifetime friends have formed since. I would particularly like to welcome not only new members but to those who have been with us over the years, that because of COVID restrictions the opportunity of social gatherings and getting a chance to meet other members has been greatly reduced. It’s looking increasingly likely that we should have a more ‘normal’ year in front of us, so we may have as many enjoyable days in the clubhouse as well as the course.
With the 2022 golfing season just around the corner with, hopefully, some settled weather, it’s time for the summer golfers to dust their off their clubs and the winter golfers to power wash theirs, in readiness for the competitions. The winter brought considerable challenges to our green’s conveners and staff. With the remedial programme well under way, we will be playing off good greens soon.
Golf is mostly an individual sport but just like any sporting club, we also play in ‘inter club’ matches and competitions. Traditionally we have not been the most competitive club, but we should try and change this, I would highly recommend that you look at sheets that will be going up in the locker room soon, identify those that best suit your handicap range and give it a go. If your interested and require any information, Steven Hunter will be happy to help.
Larne Golf Club ladies’ section has been more successful in competition over the recent years and under the stewardship of the 2022 Lady Captain, Louanne Russell, I hope this continues. Good luck to all the ladies, may the success continue but especially to Louanne in her Captains year.
This year Peter Gilmore and his team will look to inspire the next generation of golfers at Larne, with a junior programme that will run through the summer for all ages and abilities. There are great membership options for all young golfers and visitors are also very welcome. So, keep a look out for details and join in the fun.
Finally, I hope that everyone has a healthy and enjoyable year, and you are fortunate to fill a cup on prize giving night. If not, never mind, as Jack Benny said, ”Give me golf clubs, fresh air and a good 4 ball and you can keep the clubs and fresh air”.
